Music Meme

Guess who's stuck in work for the next few hours.

Rules:
Step 1: Put your MP3 player or whatever on random. (I'm having to use lastfm so some of them might be more than a smidge obscure. I've also skipped the instrumentals. And the tracks in Gaelic.)
Step 2: Post a favorite line from the first 20 songs that play
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.
Step 5: Webcheating is frowned upon.

1 - Your imperfections make you what you are
My defective star
My inelegant love

2 - Second Verse, Second verse
Already lost for words
Not complicated i'm just so frustrated

with the white jeans
for a singles night's bliss

4 - Let the clocks be reset
And the pendulums held

5 - They'd like to wed me everywan

You cannae tak’ the breeks aff a Hielan’ man

7 - Beauty is on the matress
Left in the patterns from her skin

8 - Well wouldn’t it be nice to be Dorian Gray?
Just for a day

9 - And so he gave up
On his black belt and first dan
As near as he got to China
Was a week in Camber sands

10 - as a real life person he wasn’t much fun
but he sure made a good ass bottle of rum

11 - Her eyes they shone like diamonds
I thought her the queen of the land
Black Velvet Band as guessed by [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil. The Dubliners version, of course ;)

With daytime tv and my favourite tune

13 - Now, through the town we rode together
My black eye and her red hair
Smiling gaily at the tinkers
And by God, we were a handsome pair
Red Haired Mary, as mostly guessed by [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil. The Clancy Brother's version.

14 - Our strongest weaknesses were lies
In these towering spires

(Although, given the time of year, I was tempted by - Do you hear?
I'm cutting down my christmas list this year)

15 - Again today, a thought to pass the time
To occupy my mind, while I'm waiting for her

(The lyrics are not the best thing about this song. The bassline is.)

16 - Life is short but love is strong
There lies a hope that I have found

17 - I know the night has reached that stage again,

11. Black Velvet Band
19. Queen of Argyll

[identity profile] redfiona99.livejournal.com 2014-12-02 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Correct with both. You might also know 5 and 13.

Oh, of course! #5 was my grandmother's second favourite song (after the Village People's "Macho Man") "Donald, Where's Your Troosers?"

I can sing #13 to myself but I cannot think of the title. Red-Haired Somebody? Mary? Sarah? Annie?

Excuse me, I want a point for Queen of Argyll because it was me that put it on our communal playlist.

[identity profile] redfiona99.livejournal.com 2014-12-02 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It has been duly noted :)

[identity profile] redfiona99.livejournal.com 2014-12-02 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Correct with number 5. Your grandmother's mix-list sounds interesting.

The red haired lassie is Mary in this case, but I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if she had other names. A NZ colleague had entirely different names for various songs so I suspect they've done the folk thing and mutated over time.

#6 is Wide Open Space by Mansun.

I haven't heard that song in years. I need to go see now if YouTube has the video...

[identity profile] redfiona99.livejournal.com 2014-12-02 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Correct. I thought you'd be the one that would catch that :)

I can't guess any of these! I would have guess Queen of Argyll if someone hadn't gazumped me on it.
