This is a very recent post on the same question! My nephew is 10 and an excellent reader, but doesn't like scary things. His favourite books are by Andy Griffiths and I bought him the first of the Guardians of Gar'hoole books for his birthday and he liked that.

Thanks, that's perfect.

I'm really interested in how people are responding. There's an awful lot of my friends who say things like "well I really liked book x, but it's a bit violent, I'm not sure I'd recommend it." I think there's either been a change in how we as a society see violence, or we're a lot more careful with other people's kids ;)

In my case, I lived in a very small town and had read through the kids' section of the library by the time I was 8, then went into the teens and adults section. I read some things that were way, way over my head, so in a lot of cases I could say that I enjoyed it but I wouldn't recommend it if more age-appropriate books were available. And my nephew is a very sensitive kid (just like his dad, my brother!) so I'm quite glad there's so many more books appropriate to his age around now.
