Music 2009
Sorry for the gap between the 2008 edition and this. I also have a horrible feeling I've missed something very important off of this list.
The E.N.D. - The Black Eyed Peas (Boom, Boom, Pow) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m48GqaOz90 I have to admit I prefer the mix used at the end of GI Joe. But this is stupidly catchy.
The Fame - Lady Gaga - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bESGLojNYSo I've gone with this as the exemplar because it's damn catchy.
The Blueprint 3 - Jay-Z - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UjsXo9l6I8 The with Jay-Z version of New York State Of Mind. Which I love, to some insane extent.
One Love - David Guetta - Sexy Chick - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9hazmsUxrM Obviously the radio-friendly version. I do love the undoubtedly accidental irony in the lyrics "I'm tryin' find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful" and then calling her a "sexy chick". And yet, somehow, like all David Guetta tracks, it somehow gets away with it.
Tongue n Cheek - Dizzee Rascal - Holiday - I prefer the live version so that's what you're getting - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIsYZCLTYps
Turn It Up - Pixie Lott - Boys and Girls - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7y1MdlXclM Warning earworm
Rokstarr - Taio Cruz - No Other One - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-Ze9IldfvU
The Fear - Lily Allen - The Fear - I love her so very much
~~~~
2009 Albums I Own - Bulletproof - La Roux - Quicksand - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kErEUhlPoMU
~~~~
I Got A Feeling - Black Eyed Peas - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSD4vsh1zDA which was everywhere this year. And every year since. I suspect they will still be playing in on doomsday.
Love Sex Magic - Ciara and Justin Timberlake - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raB8z_tXq7A I have this suspicion that I am not the target audience for this video
She Wolf - Shakira - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=booKP974B0k I have to admit I didn't like this when it came out because it didn't sound like Shakira, but it grew on me.
Paparazzi - Lady Gaga - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2smz_1L2_0 I still don't get the video for this, I mean, the song is about a crazed fan stalking her idol, while the video is about an idol being driven mad by the attention.
Not Fair - Lily Allen - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUYaosyR4bE I love this track so very much.
Right Round - Flo Rida - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcCw1ggftuQ Fiendishly catchy.
Number 1 - Tinchy Stryder and N-Dubz - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc7W8Q-g9Lg Also fiendishly catchy, and sweetly adorable really. In an odd sort of way.
Bonkers - Dizzee Rascal - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISy0Hl0SBfg I love this one too.
Oopsy Daisy - Chipmunk - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkXTG-AmzEA I still prefer Diamond Rings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBAshV8HS_k) because this track is boring.
Mama Do - Pixie Lott - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPV8c3Q4D8U My inability to remember Pixie Lott's name became a running joke between me and my friends.
When Love Takes Over - David Guetta and Kelly Rowland - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zudbz4hOcbc Just advanced warning, if you don't like David Guetta, tracks he produced are all over this year's list (Flo Rida, Black Eyed Peas) and over the next few. Also, I love his tracks.
Bulletproof - La Roux - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kk8eJh4i8Lo I love this to some ridiculous amount.
Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) - Florence and The Machine - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF6kBNLTvaU
Remedy - Little Boots - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McdqerXrwXE
I've grouped La Roux, Florence and the Machine and Little Boots together because they all became big at the same time, and were all either entirely female or female-fronted electro-edged acts.
Run This Town - Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVA-xTBeHyM
Beat Again - JLS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEYhGhdwMKI Yes, they're X-Factor types, but damn if this isn't catchy.
Fight For This Love - Cheryl Cole - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr31Vhu01fc Yes, she's a Cowell creation, but this and Promise This (in next year's list) are damn good pop tracks.
Break Your Heart - Taio Cruz - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_SI2EDM6Lo Discussing pop candy floss.
Candy - Paolo Nutini - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccZgxmxm32k I love this track like crazy. It's just so wonderful.
Don't Upset The Rhythm - Noisettes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qfmGokiPe8 Warning, ungodly earworm.
Down - Jay Sean - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUbpGmR1-QM It was so odd (in a good way) to suddenly see Jay Sean blow up like that, because he used to be someone stuck on 1Extra and the BBC Asian network and suddenly he was everywhere.
Fire - Kasabian - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agVpq_XXRmU&noredirect=1 Okay, so the chorus is the best bit of this, but I love the video. And it was everywhere when it came out. It still is, sports directors/music directors have some sort of affinity for it :)
I Know You Want Me - Pitbull - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAi4cvQdE9o
We Are Golden - Mika - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEhutIEUq8k&noredirect=1 Which apparently isn't called Teenage Dreams. I love this track so much.
Watcha Say - Jason Derulo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBI3lc18k8Q I don't even like this track and yet I know it's going to stick in my head for days now.
Empire State of Mind / New York - Alicia Keys - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PHOeXIPNZE Because this got so much more play in the UK than the version with Jay-Z (despite the fact, I prefer the duet). When I say play, to the point that there was a take off about Newport (Newport State Of Mind - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyRPwMC3NC0) Which lead to a response from Goldie Lookin' Chain, who are actually from Newport and are therefore offended by the fact that the previous one is more about Cardiff (You're Not From Newport - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dx8CZyFM4b4).
Hope It Gives You Hell - All American Rejects - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxUATkpMQ8A I also love this and the video.
Uprising - Muse - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8KQmps-Sog Remind me again why Muse are ground-breaking and Status Quo just have 3 chord songs according to the popular press?
Dance singles:
Evacuate the Dancefloor - Cascada - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A68j28KQaik
~~~~
Special - Killing In The Name - Rage Against the Machine - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8de2W3rtZsA Originally released in 1992, rereleased to stop an X-Factor number one, which always struck me as unfair to poor Joe McElderry, who was inoffensive, but happened to be that year's Cowell-candidate. Live version because, well they kick it live. Including when they're not allowed instruments - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE14kl7Vkrg (Rage at the Republican Convention)
The E.N.D. - The Black Eyed Peas (Boom, Boom, Pow) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m48GqaOz90 I have to admit I prefer the mix used at the end of GI Joe. But this is stupidly catchy.
