Fic - A Man Who Trusts (1/1, TNA gen fic)
Title: A Man Who Trusts
Fandom: TNA wrestling
Disclaimer: The characters aren’t mine, they belong to themselves or a variety of wrestling companies. No money is being made from this, and it is a work of fiction. I also don't own the quote in the summary, which is from Blake's 7.
Characters: Sting-centric gen fic
Rating: PG-13
Notes/Warnings: Set in Aces and Eights era TNA
Summary: As far as Sting's concerned, a man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.

He understands why Joe and Magnus think he's crazy to ask Aries to help them; he understands entirely. Austin Aries is in this for himself, Aries has never hidden that, and standing up to Aces and Eights isn't going to bring glory, it's only going to bring them pain. It still needs to be done though.
Sting has seen this before, too many times. He fought the NWO when at least two of Aces and Eights were still at their mother's apron strings. He knew their mothers, they are good people, and it's not their fault that their sons have decided to join a wrestling biker gang.
Evil like the NWO needs to be defeated. Aces and Eights are the same way.
But to beat a group like that, you need the best. He's tried to get that with Joe and Magnus and Rampage, since he's interested and willing. Given Sting's age, even if Rampage is as green as grass, Sting'll take his natural strength and demonstrable fighting ability to make up for those weaknesses that are inevitably starting to creep in.
They need good, and they need strong, and they need brave, because Aces and Eights don't fight fair, they fight with overwhelming numbers and weapons. Sometimes they don't even fight, but sneak up on you before you can even try to launch a defence.
Given that, and the situation they're in, they can't be too sniffy about who they team up with. Aries is one of the best TNA have got, and he ought to have a vested interest in getting rid of Aces and Eights from the company.
He's also always been the smaller man. Sting knows, knows with nearly thirty years of experience, if you're in a street fight, you want the shorter, lighter guy on your side because he knows more ways of fighting back than you've ever learnt.
You get a short guy with fire in his heart and violence in his soul, you're laughing.
And he's not losing anything by making the offer.
That's the thing Sting doesn't think the others understand. They think he's crazy for even trying, that he'll get turned down at best, and turned down by having something heavy thrown at him at worst. They don't get that it's easier to live with bruises than with "what if I'd done that?"
Sting will always hold his hand out. And yeah, sometimes, someone bites that hand, or takes it for a while only to use it to Irish whip him into a turnbuckle, metaphorical or otherwise. But he'll hold his hand out anyway.
No man needs to be great, but every man can be good. That's not hope, that's truth. Sting sees that potential in people, and he'd rather try and let that potential grow than worry about it being a lie.
Even Bully Ray, if after this, after he sees sense and stops this nonsense, if Bully Ray stands in front of Sting and apologises, he'll shake Bully Ray's hand, and call him friend.
They think he's naïve, they think he's foolish, they don't see that living like that is the better choice. He gets to live in hope. And sometimes he's rewarded. And sometimes he's not, but he can always hope for better next time.

End note: As always, Austin Aries the character not the dude.
