Fic - Out of the Ice (1/1, Captain America Gen)
Title: Out of the Ice
Fandom: Marvelverse
Disclaimer: I don't own the characters, they themselves do. This is not fiction. No money being made from this.
Series: Soldier of Tomorrow
Characters: Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers, background SHIELD characters
Rating/Warnings: Gen fic, spoilers for Captain America: First Avenger and Captain America: Winter Soldier
Notes: Allegiance swap AU. The original prompt say bad guys as good guys and vice versa. I have decided to have fun.
Summary: They all said finding him was a miracle.
~~~~
They all said finding him was a miracle. The only reason he was found at all was because of an Alpine glacier retreating because of global warming.
Of course, the actual miracle was that he was alive when they defrosted him, and that he'd only lost one arm to hypothermia.
But hey, they're in the future now and they can give him a replacement, and Bucky still has enough of his wits about him, recovering from 60 years in the deep freeze though they are, to say 'yes thank you' and not ask too many questions.
Fury's docs had no idea how he survived so they handed him over to the scientists, who also have no idea and seem to take great delight in taking lots of blood from Bucky while still having no idea. Anyone's best guess is that something Schmidt's men did to him while he was held captive saved him, but no-one has any idea what, how or how to replicate it.
Bucky is choosing not to worry about the how. Partly because he was alive, and planned on staying that way, so he didn't need to know and didn't need people investigating the how, and partly because he had bigger things to worry about. Like aliens.
Aliens were new. Luckily, unlike everything else about the 21st century, aliens were new to everyone, so Bucky isn't alone when he stands there shocked for a few seconds before his training catches up with him.
Along with having to get over that initial shock, there was also the news that apparently some of the aliens were on our side and some of them were enemies, and one of them is Thor the Thunder God.
Bucky thinks he's doing quite well with coping with everything at this point. Gods, monsters, aliens, superheroes.
Coulson, sad eyes and a manila folder of evidence in hand, filled him in on what had happened to everyone else. Peggy Carter had gone from being a dame to being a Dame, and had been a mucky-muck in SHIELD until a couple of years ago. Everyone else was dead, even Howard, who Bucky expected to be the one to come up with a way of being immortal.
And Bucky is coping with that, because what else can you do, even with the knowledge that they never found Steve's body. That was why Steve had come after him, a shared agreement, if anything happened to either of them, they'd make sure they were buried in the parish graveyard.
He's learning to live with the fact that they'll never find the body, because if Howard Stark couldn't find it, then it can't be found, not with all of Fury's nous and Tony's money.
Or rather, he was learning to live with it, until he sees Steve's face under the mask of the assassin trying to kill them all. And it is Steve, not a clone or an alien or anything like that, because he recognises that movement, that sort of ducking back shuffle at the start of a fight that not even growing into All-Mighty Captain America broke him of.
It's Steve. And Steve's working for the bad guys. But Bucky knows there's more to it than that, because whatever happened to Steve, Steve doesn't recognise him, and Steve recognises his friends - Steve Rogers went through a war to rescue Bucky because Steve recognises his friends. There's no force on Earth, no force outside of Earth, that's going to stop Bucky returning the favour.
End notes: This goes AU at two points in order for the characters to swap places. Bucky still falls off the train, but Hydra don't find him, while Steve still goes down stopping Schmidt's plan, but he is found by Hydra. I have also included a piece of personal fanon, which is that Bucky was experimented on by Schmidt and Hydra while originally captured so he has something similar to super soldier serum going on.
And yes, in the AU version of Civil War that follows, the arm becomes a plot point.
