Chapter 1 of all 8 Star Wars: The Old Republic Class Stories
I was going to try and do a ranking of the stories, but I realised that was quite difficult because several of the stories are of similar quality (mostly good), and none of them are bad, so I've done a good things and bad things about the first chapter for each story instead.
Good things: internally consistent, there's the feeling that it's *your* character that is making the difference and that your choices matter.
Bad things: Nothing. Jedi consular is my favourite of the first chapters. (The Jedi Consular is my favourite overall story so far. I am aware I am in a minority.)
Good things: The first shock and then the twist both wham! the way they are supposed to. Kaliyo (yes, she is my highlight of most things). The Tatooine story is fun.
Bad things: It's sometimes hard to remember who you're double-crossing when, but not in the way that the game wants you to.
Good things: The wham at the end of the prologue works. Probably the best wham of all of them. 4X as your patriotic robot companion.
Bad things: the individual planet missions do get a bit samey, and I'm interested in how they decided which of Havok squad could be redeemed. I mean, I am fine with Needles getting theirs, because what they did really was wrong beyond wrong (oddly enough, scientific ethics, they matter) but Gearbox's change in behaviour is a real 180.
Also, Havok defecting because they get no support from the Republic/have been betrayed by Republic Command is the first of many similar cases, in various different stories but mostly several of the Troopers, and that gets a bit samey.
Good things: the character stuff (seriously, the Inquisitor Balmorra storyline is amazing and one of the best 'there is no good option' stories in the game) and the world building. The thing at the end is evil, demented genius.
Bad things: The actual missions, all "go get the dingsbums", get samey.
Good things: one of the intermission missions (Distressed) is just the most fun. It is generally fun and there's a distinct sense of place. You get to beat Skavak and get your ship back. There's a nice bit of mystery to the stories, and the Alderaan story is a lot of fun.
Bad things: Nice Guy (tm) thy name is Corso Riggs, but luckily Bowdar exists so Corso can be avoided after the first two planets. You don't get to punch Skavak in the face. The game really doesn't like it if your smuggler does smuggler-type things. Which makes no sense.
Good things: You can slowly seduce Jaesa onto your side, and it's so satisfyingly evil. It's an enjoyable sort of character. The individual planetary stories are fun.
Bad things: How the Alderan plot line works out - it's very much a case of "that dialogue cue does not lead where you think it does."
Good: The Tatooine plot. T7, adorable bot companion. Player character and Orgus Din, incredibly sarcastic Jedi Master.
Bad: Male voice-over version at least, is such a goody goody. Like unnaturally so. The way the end of the chapter plot goes doesn't quite work.
Good: Again, this is another one where you feel that your choices matter. I worry about Mako (my main companion), I want to get revenge for Braden, it draws you in.
Bad: Much like the Smuggler, the game doesn't like me doing bounty hunter type things.
