There are apparently two Sherlock Holmes films coming out in the near future. I should be excited, except I can't work up anything but dread for them.
One features Sascha Baron Cohen as our favourite consulting detective, which I'd be fine with if I didn't think it was going to be a spoof because he'd make a wonderful Holmes if he played it straight. He's got the height, the intelligence, and I'm sure he'd be brilliant (and I don't even like his work). But ... hmmm ... spoofage. I don't mind pastiches and spoofs done with love (such as Without a Clue and whatever the Billy Wilder one is called), but I'm dubious.
The other one has Robert Downey jr as Holmes, which, again, pretty neat casting (Twig, if you read this, is he any good at accents?). Intensity, intelligence, charm are all covered. But Guy Ritchie is directing and I'm not so sure how well he does outside of his comfort zone.
I'll still probably end up watching them both, but still...
