One Night Stand was soooo good

Before I start on that, just 1 question to those of you who know about ECW - is there more hatred towards WCW, or was it just not politic to complain about WWE on a show WWE were paying for?

Missed the first 15 minutes, but was taping it on Sky Plus so I should be able to watch it anyway. All hail Sky Plus.

So the first match I saw was Tajiri v Nunzio v Super Crazy (yes, I know he was Little Guido again for the night, but just bear with me, he's stuck as Nunzio in much the same way that Road Dogg and K-Kwick are still that.) Who do I have to thank for that because eeeee! so good. And Super Crazy is so deserving of that name.

Plus, the match meant I finally found out what Tracy Smothers looked like. And Mickey Whipwreck. And you know, found out that Rvd. James Mitchell is the Sinister Minister (I am dumb).

And then they gave me Rey Mysterio jr v Psicosis. Pre-empting complaints by smarks, so no, it wasn't the greatest match ever and a few things went awry but what the hell, I got two kick-ass cruiserweight/x-div/light-heavyweight/lucha libre/what-the-fuck-ever matches on one card. I don't care. Two that were uninterupted by interference because someone in the booking department thought, 'oh the fans won't mind if we use someone disrupting a cruiserweight match to make a point'.

Just presume I spent the entirety of RVD's promo, and Sabu and Rhyno's match complete with interference going squeak! eek! and ouch! because I did. So good.

Benoit v Guerrero would have been even better if it was longer. Am as amused as Joey Styles that these two were the first to draw blood.

Much love to Paul Heyman. Oh of course it was the joint that was making his eyes red.

Spent the entirety of Awesome v Tanaka going ouch! ouch! ouch! And not just because of what Joey Styles was saying.

The last match was cool. If a little bloodthirsty. There was Kid Kash!!!!! (Hmm, needs more exclamation marks) And Stevie and violence and Spike and it rocked, and that's without me having a huge emotional investment in ECW so I can't imagine how much it rocked if you did have one.

Only complaint - could have done with less WWE. Although Wheee for Tazz choking out Angle. Will only be truly happy if this happens on this week's SD too.

The only problem with the fun-ness of this PPV was that it kind of showed up the lack of fun-ness of other recent WWE PPVs. Now I promised after last year's WM that I would be nice about WWE so this isn't me bashing them, this is con-crit that they aren't going see ;)

Problem 1 - people cared about these matches, okay for special reasons, but they cared about matches where there wasn't a belt involved. What was the last RAW feud that people cared about where there were no belts involved? (Not rhetorical, feel free to answer) The last SD one I can think of is Eddie v Rey Rey and that's because instead of it all being posturing and grrr, there's emotion attached as well.

Problem 2 - let's look at the Crusaders for a minute. Who did RAW have? Bischoff who's not a wrestler, Coach who is not a wrestler, Edge who no one gives a damn about (sorry Edge), Maven, Snitsky who, well, what is the purpose of Snitsky, Tomko ditto, Christian who is at least entertaining, Regal who rocks (but isn't totally WWE), the French Fries and I think that's it.

SD had Angle (who is good), JBL (who I am fond of), Carlito (who I am fond of), Orlando Jones (who occasionally show signs of being interesting), Matt Morgan and the Bashams. Have I forgotten someone?

If we ignore the ones that have been imbeded for quite some time, the new guys don't seem to have much purpose. Sure you've got Carlito and Piper's Pit redux, which is fun, and La Res who have functional characters going (though who knows what they're going to do with them when there's finally a split) but the others haven't got characters (stuttering is not a character, it's a gimmick that was stale and old before Bubba Ray stopped using it) and it's not like ROH where you can get by on being a great wrestler alone, this is sports entertainment and these guys are being seriously let down by the writing.

So basically, IMO, WWE would be a lot better if the writers got their fingers out and started to write decent plots and characters and basically did their job to a reasonable standard.
