Short term goals… what do you hope to complete this week or in <strike>January</strike> April?

Finish reading through, feedbacking and adding to the 3 Sentence Ficathon (which given I've got about 5 days where I won't be able to do anything and I'm choosing to pace myself at 5 pages a day does see me pretty much through to the end of April).

Once that's done, post the good 3SF stories to AO3 and post the things I have finished off in the background.
Last year I only managed to publish 10 fics on AO3, which is less than the 12 I aim for.

But that's okay because I spent most of November and December tidying the fics that had been ported in from WWFSML. (Here's where I say thank you again to bring_me_sugar and Julie from the Open Doors project for all their hard work)

Reviewing fics you wrote 25 years ago is definitely an intriguing torment.

I downloaded and then deleted the ones that couldn't be quickly fixed and fixed the ones that could be fixed.

Things I have noted:

1) I still can't spell occasionally. But I have learnt to use a spellchecker.

2) I have improved.

3) Part of that, I think, is that I'm now more willing to go, "actually, yeah, that's a gen fic."

4) I think I always cared about character voice. I think I'm better at it now.

5) There's one structure of a fic that I am reusing, not deliberately, but because that was always how that fic was going to be structured. That's not changed, I still believe in shape and structure and architecture.

6) I used to be a lot more spontaneous. I think that's partly in ~ 2010 I decided to write the notes for every idea down so I didn't lose ideas anymore. There's several fics that can only be found in notes lost in various house moves. The downside is that I'm now working on fics I had the ideas for in 2013.

7) I used to be obnoxious. Several of you are still around from back in the day - please accept this apology. I didn't notice at the time and I have worked to become less obnoxious over time. If I am still being obnoxious, at any point, please say and I will try to stop it.

comments

The fic that reached 1000 was Ideas and Actions, NC-17 Randy/Trish fic written for the 50 Kinky Ways fest (I promise I will try to finish more of those). It was entirely written by the imp of the perverse to the prompt "cross-dressing" because I was bored that all the other fics I'd seen on the theme in the fest were men cross-dressing as women.

The chart it affected is the fudge factor one, unfortunately, rather than the proper one, so the two charts (all fics and split into shippy and non-shippy) now look like this:

( Under the cut )

Shippy fic is clearly more likely to reach 1000 hits at this point.

(Unless something very unexpected happens, I would not expect an update on this figure for some time. Unexpected is reboots [or Batista appearing in films].)

comments

Unexpectedly, in November, two fics crossed the 1000 hits threshold.

The two are Today When", which is squooshy, guooshy Adam Ward Batman Bruce/Dick and Man, Indivisible which is Nolan-verse Bruce/Rachel, Rachel/Harvey, Bruce/Harvey, with a couple of touches from the comics and the Animated Series.

Mostly I'm learning that being Batman fic makes it more likely that a fic hits that (no really 3 out of 4 Batman fics have).

More sensibly, it's a really nice visual for "small numbers make for poor conclusions".

Behold the "properly" done graph now.

What's actually happened is that "Man, Indivisible" was the first fic posted once I ironed out how to do Kaplan-Meiers properly and because it's the oldest, there's a sudden drop now it has crossed over. Now, that's likely to go, quite quickly, as time progresses and more fics move past that time point, but it does make the figure look silly.

Splitting it into 'shippy and not 'shippy ( Behind the cut )

You still get the sudden drop but it's less steep. I do like how much more it looks like a "proper" Kaplan Meier now.

One other change is that 'shippy fics are now statistically more likely to cross the threshold, with p = 0.003.

comments

I understand the draw of Hogwarts AUs, and indeed, AUs into other fandoms where characters are split by some sort of personality feature into separate and distinct units. Because it allows you to play with "what's the most important facet of this character", "what's a hidden facet of this character that I want to explore", "what if half of them makes them a perfect fit for group 1 but the other half into group 2, how does that work?", "if I split this character away from the characters they are usually with, do they still become friends because destiny says so" etc.

Although it does lead to some odd moments, like sports fans trying to pretend most people aren't the Slytheriniest Slytherins that ever slithered. Seriously, sports fans, your favourites are Slytherins, just accept it. In F1 in particular, with the exception of Hamilton (Gryffindor) and Vettel (originally Slytherin, now mysteriously Hufflepuff), anyone driving now is a Slytherin. Particularly Max Verstappen. Who would happily sell his grandmother to win, and both his grandmothers would be fine with it.

( Other Days )

comments

And it's not either of those pairings, but still ...

So, in the spirit of fandom and convergent evolution, what is the pairing you think of when you see the tag "Friends to almost-lovers to enemies to friends to lovers"?

comments
