Last Day of the TV meme
Day 30 - Saddest Character Death
There are two options:
Toshiko and Owen. And no, I'm not separating them. Because wah, if I watch Torchwood, then it's all I can think of. And they're such interesting characters (did I mention that Owen Harper is one of my favourite fictional characters, and he loves Tosh, and he'll never ever let her know [because he is an arsehole, of the highest, lowest, worst, most terrible order]). And, oh their goodbye. And then Tosh's final message.
Oh Tosh and Owen, I miss you.
Matters are really not helped by Aliens of London being shown yesterday, and Tosh showing up and the glorious retcon that's mentioned in their death scene and wah!
Of all the stupid things, it's Peter Templer, who is probably the least interesting of the four main characters.
Some background, Dance to the Music of Time (DTTMOT) is a series of books, that were turned into an 4 part TV series (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118297/combined). The way the TV version did it, it is, at heart, the story of what happens to one man and three of his school friends. He is called Nick Jenkins, and his friends are Charles Stringham, who is one of those witty, fey, lost boys I like so much, Peter Templer, who is very English and sports and play up and play the game, and Kenneth Widmerpool, who I once heard described as less a person, more an adjective. He is one of those characters, perfectly portrayed by Simon Russell-Beale, who you can't help but loathe, even while you do feel sorry for him.
Widmerpool wants revenge for his schoolfellow's cruelty. He gets the opportunity for it, when, mostly through being in the right place at the right time, he is high up in the army during WW2. He manages to get Stringham sent to the front lines in the Pacific. It is assumed that he dies when captured. He sends Stringham out there, knowing he's already a broken man, with malice aforethought. I swear never to forgive him, because, as I say, Stringham is my favourite. This happens towards the end, I think, of the second episode, or the very start of the third.
Widmerpool is very taken by Pamela Fitton, who is, I think, a cousin of Stringham. She is beautiful, but just as messed up as her cousin. She is also desired by Templer, who was everything that Stringham wasn't. Our four lead characters are all slightly too old to be active soldiers, but Templer ignores this in an attempt to impress Pamela. He gets his throat slit for his pains. That's the fade out to the third ad break in the third episode.
Various other things go wrong for the characters, but I don't feel too bad, mildly saddened because bad things kept happening to characters I liked, but nowhere near bad enough to explain what happened next.
I went to bed and, because I couldn't sleep, I started thinking about what had happened and why, and the pettiness, the human condition and the pointlessness of it all (I was 13, morbidness was my middle name). I think the thing that set me off was the sheer stupidity of the chain of events and all the points where it could and wasn't out of human flaws and weaknesses.
For some reason, and I couldn't explain it if I tried, Templer's death got to me, and I burst into tears, long enough and loud enough to wake up my grandmother, who I then had to explain myself to. I went with my traditional defence of nightmares.
