One of the weirder Freeview channels was showing the 2003 version of the Lion in Winter. Which was an odd experience. Because I know the film very well. And it's not that it's bad.

Part of the problem is that, to pinch a line from Douglas Adams, very little money has been spared to show no money has been spared, but most of the crowd scenes looked like extras had been told to look like they're having lots of fun.

Nothing wrong with their Henry or Eleanor, though the characters are read very differently. I think there's a conscious decision to underplay the theatricality of the roles, which makes very little sense to me but it does affect the feel of the thing. The other problem is that of the younger people, Rafe Spall as John is by far the strongest actor, and that really skews things because where the film one is just a sulky lump, he's actually cruel to the servants, but he's very good at making you feel sorry for John.

I would have watched the rest of it but a friend called and we went to see Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

So I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the opening best of all. I entirely understand anyone who complains that parts of it feel like a less fun retread of the Fifth Element, but bits of it stand up on its own. Luc Besson continues to be a magnificent director, he just needs help with his scripts. Like, possibly someone going "people don't speak like that" every now and again. It would be a good start.

I think having slightly stronger actors in the lead roles would help too. Because Clive Owen and whoever played General Okto-Bar did a much better job of coping with the dialogue than Dane DeHaan or Cara Delevigne.

But I happily forgive all of that for the visuals. I am a Cinema du Look girl, and always will be.

One of the knock-on (but obvs. less minor) effects of the job was that I had either no time to write, or when I did have time, I didn't have the mental energy. Which was annoying. I don't think I would have written all that much more fic last year even without that because most of the things I'm working on are being tricky. But it was also the case for my non-fandom writing and that's annoying. I didn't even have the energy to edit the novel (I am aware that civilisations have risen and fallen in the time it has taken me to write one very short novel). So that is on the to-do list, but it will be a lot more enjoyable that tidying the flat.

With regard to fic, I was wondering if any of the North American wrestling fans on my flist would mind reading over a ~4000 word fic that I hope to have finished in ~ 6 weeks. (I have two more scene to write and some set dressing to do.)

Normally I would be so specific but the fic features CM Punk being ... himself and a few more very wrestling specific things.

8 big fics plus 4 comment_fic ficlets (2 of which are quite long), which is less than intended but a goodly number considering.

I had hoped to get Becoming finished before X-Men: Apocalypse came out but que sera and all that.

As Peter got out of the car, Alex turned to him and said, "you know you've always got a place in whatever I'm doing. Three Mills Lane, Bow. Look for the dingy white building next to the Japanese restaurant. I keep telling Dad we need better premises but he's attached to the old place."

A re-run of the meme where you list the fics you've named after song lyrics or titles (I've seen it described both ways). The one's that are new are in bold

I think mine can be split up into 4 main groups:

Fics actually named after songs )

Fics named after song lyrics )

Fics with titles taken from lyrics/song titles that I've altered slightly )

Fics with titles taken from songs where it becomes clear that yours truly can't hear a word people are singing )

Went to see Edge of Tomorrow. Not the cerebral flick I had been led to believe it was but it was a solid action flick with a nice line in black comedy.

It could have done with a brief geography lesson and one tiny bit of Brit-picking )

Yes, I'm being nit-picky but it had a budget of $175 million, I expect the details to be checked.

I did like it, but I thought the ending let it down a bit. Spoilers )

The real question becomes, when did secondary character wearing a Hawaiian shirt become Hollywood shorthand for "yay we've cast an Aussie"? Not that I mind Kick Gurry getting a part. Actually, the real question is why Noah Taylor not in everything? (This can be joined by 'why is Saïd Taghmaoui not in everything' because he should be. He was the only enjoyable thing about Conan the Barbarian.)

Bill Paxton and Emily Blunt are also very good in this, and I like what they do with the main character and Tom Cruise does it well.

Forgive me football fans, I am about to sin. I shall miss the first three World Cup games (fencing, charity quiz, wedding). I feel strange and peculiar about this.

That was not the fic I expected to finish next. It leads to an important question. If I say "Doctor In The House", am I the only person who flashes straight to James Robertson Justice?
redfiona99: (Thinking)
Redoing this meme from 2007. What's interesting is how much some of my answers have changed.

What do you find _______ about writing?

Hardest?
I'm a very visual writer, quite often my fics start when I get an image of what's going on, and I then try and put that into words. That normally leads to issues with me missing important details, like say that there is a knife, because *of course* everyone can see the knife, can't they? This is why gaps between writing and posting are important.

Easiest?
Actually having the ideas in the first place. Turning those ideas into something on the page, not so much.

Most fun?

This hasn't changed. >>When the writing just comes, like you start, and then when you look again its an hour later and you've written 3 pages, because you've not been writing it, you've just been describing what's happening in your head.<<

Most Tedious?

Also unchanged >>In nearly every fic there's one scene. And you can see it clearly in your head, but you just can't get it down in writing, and you don't know if it's the words, or the action, or that you're not conveying the mood or feelings or emotions. And then you spend 3 weeks stuck on that one scene. Annoyingly, quite often its a pivotal scene, and you know that the minute it's done the rest of the fic will come along nicely, but you just can't get through this bit and you've been staring at the same fic for 1/2 an hour and nothing's changed.<<

I'd also like to add linking scenes here. Those horrible little not fully fledged things where you need to go from character A and character B being in place one and you need to get them to place two but at the same time something needs to happen to give them a reason for that and you just can't think what that reason could be.

Coolest?

Finding out other people enjoy it. Okay, so I know I'm supposed to be in this for myself, but dudes, it's is indeed totally cool to find out other people like my stuff.

Least cool? The fact that I keep having really good ideas that I know I'm not a good enough writer (and may never be a good enough writer) to write well. I find it frustrating.

Best? Looking over things I've written, after a suitable cooling off period and being able to say, yes, I am satisfied with that.

Worst? Those fics, where it just doesn't come off, and you've tried your best, you really have. And possibly worse, you don't know why it didn't work, so it's not like there's something you can work on improving.
redfiona99: (Thinking)
1 - Did anyone ever come up with a good thank you for people who say how much they want an update/sequel of a fic you've tagged complete?

2 - I will be doing a lot of travelling this week (Birmingham - Cambridge, Cambridge - London, London - Birmingham) so if anyone wants to send me any prompts, I will do my best to write them. (It's either that or the unnaturally long It Ain't Half Hot, Mum fic that no one else will ever want to read.)

So I'm writing Rome fic. Octavian-centric Rome fic. Which means there's already some issues, in re: his sister. And him. Anyway, stuff happens, and there's a section about slaves. And it's Rome fic. And tight 3rd Person on Octavian so the story at no point says anything about this being very wrong. Which, okay, people who are reading Rome fic know what they're getting into, the TV show did that too for effect.

Only then Octavian goes and plans the getting of a wife, and we hit Roman issues re: women's right. And before that, Roman issues re: men who have sex with men. And like I said, I think anyone who watch Rome would know all this but ...

I wasn't expected angsty Jack/Ianto to be the next thing I finished (it is done, I'm just leaving it alone for a week to check that it actually is finished and I don't need to add or remove anything). I mean, it still may need a title, because Heart's Constriction isn't a real title, and my terrible tendency for joke titles is not helping (no, self, you can't call it "A Shot To The Heart").
redfiona99: (Thinking)
Does anyone have the time to proof-read, particularly spotting any British-isms, a ~1300 word X-Men fic? It's mutant politics and Robert Kelly and goes AU about mid-way through the first film.

Question first:

Character A is in Lurve with character B.
Character B (who is probably as in love with Character A as it is possible for him to be in love with anyone, it's just for character B values of love) tries to warn him off.

What the heck does author Me put in the header. I mean, I think it's a slash fic, but you can see the problem. It's not exactly unrequited but it's not even vaguely requited. Help, suggestions, comments that it really would be easier not to write Sherlock fic are all accepted.

Day 30 – Do you have a favorite fic you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

Remarkably easy :)

Walking In These Shoes

I think it's my favourite because it succeeded on two levels:

1 - Artistic Merit - Or people liked it, people actually liked it. I got a lot of positive feedback from readers who hadn't even been the target audience. It has been recced in various places. People liked the mix of character and explosions.

2 - Technical Merit - I mostly write character pieces, where people think or talk but they do not do. There's no plot to them. So I said no, this time there would be plot. And there was. It may have been off-screen until it happened to Pepper but there was plot.

It's very satisfying when fics work on both levels.

Once you've seen the length of this, you'll see why I'm posting twice today.

What is your current project or projects?

It's projects, because I have the attention span of a gnat and if I focus on one thing it won't get done.

One of the big things is the series of Mystique fics of which so much has been said. I'm hoping to have at least the first couple out before Days of Future Past comes out. (About which, in advance, flail, so much flail. I know not to get my hopes up just from the posters but have you seen them - http://hellotailor.tumblr.com/post/56173691459/first-posters-for-x-men-days-of-future-past Love and care has gone into that poster.)

Other than that there is:

X-Men )

Other Marvel-verse, because I still hold the X-Men as a separate thing )

Buffy The Vampire Slayer )

Holmesania )

Doctor Who and friends )

Wrestling )

Miscellaneous )

That's not counting the various half a dozen half-finished comment_fics, and the to-write list which is where I put my ideas which then get upgraded once I finish anything. If I finish anything.

Day 28 – Have you ever collaborated with anyone else, whether writing together, or having an artist work on a piece about your fic?

Sort of.

I've never co-written anything, and no one has ever done any fanart/fanmix/remix/whathaveyou to any of my fics (although I've had a couple of fics translated). I'd just like to use this as an opportunity to say if you do ever want to do anything like that, just give me a shout and let me look at it once you're done.

The nearest I've come are the shared universes that [livejournal.com profile] rise_your_dead started. They were fun, and I have to admit I'd give my right arm (or at the very least someone else's right arm) to know what happened next in [livejournal.com profile] opera142's part of the Factory Town one.

Science:

Good news: I may have interesting results
Bad news: I can't interpret them because work computer is, to quote the Linux dude, "shafted".

Good news: The project students are gone at the end of the week
Bad news: Leaving me with a mess of data because they did not listen and didn't add DTT or TCEP to buffers when I told them to.

RL:

Good news: The students being gone means I can start fencing again
Bad news: I haven't fenced in months. I am going to die. And so is my wallet (need to resub to the national body and pay my club membership).

Writing:

Good news: I am getting somewhere with the novel I'm working on (hat-tip to [livejournal.com profile] idleleaves for some of her suggestions).
Bad news: I'm not sure I'm getting anywhere useful.

Good news: I think I know how I'm ending part 2 of the never ending Mystique fic
Bad news: Part of the solution is to add about 2 more long paragraphs of thinking and a bit more speaking. Part 5 is already 6 people sitting around a table with no action. I wanted there to be less of that in part 2. (Part 4 is two people sitting round a table but fun stuff happens, and part 6 is two people sitting round a table but interesting stuff happens)

Fanfiction Meme - Day 27 – Where is your favorite place to write, and do you write by hand or on the computer?

Not sure it's my favourite place, but I do most of my writing on my sofa. I wish I had a desk (like I used to) but there is no room in my flat. I used to write in bed but there's only one easily accessible socket in my bedroom and my alarm clock now uses that.

I write using my laptop and, 99/100ths of the time, using Notepad. I have no idea why I prefer it to writing in Word, I just do. I always send my fics through Word before I post. It's amazing the number of times doing that catches those little details I've forgotten to put in, or those tiny mistakes I have left in.

For some unknown reason, I find it easier to write Harry Potter fic by hand.

Because my RL is both busy, science-filled and boring (unless you want 20 minute discussions on the best way to present data).

26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a fic?

A lot of the things under the "questions" tag are Ameri-picking US-cultury questions, because the Bill Bryson* quote about "two countries divided by a common language" is so very true.

There are things I have researched for the 50 Kinky Ways fics that mean I am very tempted to have "please wipe my search history" written into my will.

I remember looking up what a samurai would wear as underwear, and getting bunnies for another fic (which is still in the 'to write' pile). Wrestling, of course, leads to you trying to research exactly who had what match where and who was interfering with what and so on, not discussing the time I had to move Christmas to avoid interfering with a fic.

The only thing worse than googling wrestlers to remember their timing and plots is doing the same but for X-Men characters. Apparently there are now 3 Thunderbirds and 2 Masterminds.

* Okay probably not him at all, but he's who I have it associated with. In the spirit of the question I looked it up and no-one knows but there's a lot of people blaming George Bernard Shaw.

25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

I need something on in the background, normally the TV rather than music (although sometimes it's music on TV). I just find it easier to write with something else going on.

- Quote a part of the song that you think has any similarity with the story of the couple
- Comment.

2) Susan Ivanova/Marcus Cole (Babylon 5) )

3) Kira/Odo (Deep Space 9) )

4) Noin/Zechs (Gundam Wing) )

5) Fai/Kurogane (Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles) )

6) Flair/Orton (Wrestling) )

7) Black Widow/Hawkeye (Avengers movie-verse) )

8) Zoe/Wash (Firefly) )

9) Vince/Stuart (Queer as Folk) )

10) Charles Xavier/Magneto (X-Men, any and all variants) )

2nd Meme - Day 24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your fic? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?

I don't tend to get my fics beta-ed. Mostly because they tend to be, at maximum, 2000 words and I ought to be able to get that much done properly myself. Especially at the speed I write.

There are exceptions, of course. For instance, for A Short Week of Long Days I'd been writing it for 6-7 years and so could recite chunks of it in my sleep almost so there was no way I was going to be able to tell if it even worked for someone who wasn't me, and [livejournal.com profile] opera142 was kind enough to beta it for me.

And if I'm doing a fest/ficathon where they ask for the fics to be beta-ed I try to get one. I've never had a bad experience. The Time Between wouldn't have been half as good without [livejournal.com profile] renata_kedavra's fantastic beta-ing.

Day 23 – When you post, where do you post to? Just your journal? Just an archive? Your own personal site?

For everything - this journal, Archive of our Own

For non-wrestling fic - this journal, Archive of our Own, whichever of my two fanfiction.net accounts I think is more appropriate

For non-wrestling PWPs - this journal, Archive of our Own, Adult Fanfiction.net

For wrestling fic - this journal, Archive of our Own and wwfsml (where appropriate)

Eventually everything will get put up on my personal website, which is called Sehnsucht and can be found here - http://redfiona.tripod.com/
